Learn what to stop doing + how to start getting seen
⚠️ Mistake #1: Waiting Too Long to Start
Recruiting starts earlier than most people realize. Many coaches are building their lists as early as 8th–10th grade. Waiting until your senior year can limit your options significantly.
✅ Fix It:
Start the recruiting process early. Begin collecting film, building a target list of schools, and crafting your outreach strategy by 9th or 10th grade.
⚠️ Mistake #2: Not Having a Highlight Film
Coaches don’t have time to watch full game footage. If you don’t have a clear, exciting 2–3 minute highlight video, they may skip you entirely.
✅ Fix It:
Record all your games. Then build a 2–3 minute highlight video that shows your best plays, key skills, and versatility. Add your name, class, position, and contact info at the beginning.
⚠️ Mistake #3: Not Reaching Out to Coaches
Sitting back and waiting to be discovered rarely works. Coaches need to see interest, hear from players, and be reminded who you are.
✅ Fix It:
Start emailing coaches at schools that fit your level and academic goals. Introduce yourself, share your film, and include key info like stats, GPA, and why you’re interested in their program.
⚠️ Mistake #4: Only Chasing D1 Schools
A ton of talented players miss out on life-changing opportunities because they’re locked in on Division 1 only. The truth is—fit matters more than hype.
✅ Fix It:
Be open to D2, D3, NAIA, and JUCO schools. These programs offer scholarships, strong coaching, and great academic fits. Keep your options wide.
⚠️ Mistake #5: Parents Not Being Involved
Parents play a huge role—handling logistics, emails, visits, and making informed decisions. If parents are out of the loop, opportunities can fall through.
✅ Fix It:
Work together as a family. Set goals, stay organized, and make sure everyone knows the timeline, tasks, and communication plan.
